Nowadays, the world is facing severe energy crisis and environment problems. One ofthe best ways to deal with these problems is to develop hydrogen fuel vehicles. But limitedto a series of hydrogen energy supply difficulties such as the hydrogen transport and storage, hydrogen fuel vehicles have not been widely used yet. The harness of three way catalyticconverter is a useful method to reduce emissions of hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuel vehicles. The combustion emission and economy characteristics of hydrogen-gasoline dual-fuelvehicles are important issues restricting its development. The focus of this paper is trying to explore the new features of the combustionduration in HICE not only by doing engine experiment, but also by analyzing the physicalproperties of hydrogen, especially the obvious differences from those of gasoline. Thelaminar flame speed difference between hydrogen and gasoline was studied and discussed.A distinctive rule of combustion duration in HICE was discovered by analyzing theexperiment data. As a key reference point to the HICE operation, a new characteristic of thelocation of50%mixture combust up was proposed and analyzed, this will be helpful for thecalibration of optimum ignition timing. What’s more, this article studies the OH spacedistribution of hydrogen-air mixture at different concentrations by using PLIF laser testingmethods. The study is experimental basis of hydrogen-air mixture laminar burningchemical kinetics. On common condition and load characteristics, the conversion efficiency of TWC ingasoline engine is measured in this paper. Then the TWC is connected to a hydrogeninternal combustion engine. The TWC which has already worked hours in hydrogeninternal combustion engine is connected to the gasoline internal combustion engine again.Experiment results show that the conversion efficiency of CO, HC and NOx does notdecline significantly(less than4%). Therefore, the traditional TWC in hydrogen-gasolinedual-fuel alternative working mode can guarantee the high efficiency. To study the potential economy of hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles, thispaper investigates the production costs of hydrogen and the conversion costs of traditionalvehicles to hydrogen-fueled ones. The emission trade expenses of converting cars and busesto hydrogen-fueled vehicles are discussed. The investigations show that the cost of using hydrogen is about2Yuan/Nm3to2.5Yuan/Nm3. Compared with gasoline cars, hydrogeninternal combustion engine cars reduce fuel consumption costs by35%. The fuelconsumption costs of hydrogen buses can be reduced by20%compared with that ofsingle-deck diesel buses. Excluding the government subsidy, the conversion costs ofgasoline cars to hydrogen-fueled cars will be offset by the emission trade and fuel savingswithin three years. The conversion costs of diesel buses to hydrogen-fueled buses will beoffset in10years. Therefore, improved economic and environmental benefits will berealized by developing hydrogen-fueled vehicles.
