In recent years, Inner Mongolia Hetao Irrigation Area has been built a lot of canalanti-frost engineerings, in which U-shaped concrete linings were widely used in variouscanals because of its good hydraulic conditions, covers less areas, anti-frost and so on.However, As the temperature is often negative in winter, the frost heave occurred in thecanals. So the concrete lining of canal appeared varying degree frost damages, and someeven lost their application value. Because of the good performance of frost heavingseepage, FRP(Glass Peinforced Plastic) is gradually applied to small canal seepagecontrol project. Based on the FRP canal in Hetao Irrigation Area, some conclutions toprovide theoretical analysis and scientific basis for the future of the FRP canalengineering are presented in this paper. The main contents and conclusions are as follow:(1)After the freezing-thawing cyclic loading test of canal FRP blocks, test theappearance quality of observation and weighing. Then made into tensile and bendingspecimens, obtained the variations of strength and elastic modulus were studied throughtensile test and bending test. It is noted that FRP materials rarely absorbent, and havethe good antifreeze performance. FRP materials ensure the practical application of thecanal.(2)Using ANSYS software for the anti-frost performance of FRP and concretecanal lining. According to the canal to establish finite element models, obtained thetemperature field analysis results by steady-state thermal analysis. Then converted unittype, and applying thermal analysis results for structural static analysis withdisplacement filed and stress field. The analysis result shows that the frost heavingperformance of FRP canal is better than the concrete canal, and in line with the newstyle canal theory:“the soft overcomes rigid, adapting to deformations”. (3)Studying deeply on FRP canal and concrete canal from three aspects ofeconomic benefits, ecological environment benefits and social benefits were conducted.Analysis results show that, compared with the concrete canal, FRP canal has goodhydraulic conditions, good saving of water and filed. Although investment costs of FRPcanal increase slightly, the late ecological and social benefits will be more apparent.Considering all these factors, the overall advantages of FRP canal is higher thanconcrete canal.Above all, this paper conducted the FRP mechanical performance based on thetensile test and bending test after freeze-thaw cycles, and studied on comprehensivebenefit of FRP canal and concrete canal through numerical and theoretical analysis,which provides a science popularization and application value for the small U-shapedFRP canal in the Hetao Irrigation Area and most northern seasonal frozen region.
