The atrium space is popular with users, architects and real estate developers due to its unique advantages. The development of the era gives the atrium space a new connotation. Along with the new era, new technologies and new space concepts, we need to stand in a higher dimension to look at the development of the atrium space. Designers need to think about how to integrate the contemporary architectural atrium space with the new space concept, how to focus on people’s behavior and psychology, how to adapt to the natural environment, how to balance the contradiction between the atrium buildings and urban environment and so on. New backgrounds put forward higher requirements to the atrium space design. In this paper, we expound the contemporary architectural atrium space’s development trend in detail.Based on the change in the development of the contemporary architectural atrium space, this paper analyses the atrium space’s design elements and design principles from the course and motivation of atrium space. Combined with related cases and theories, we analysis the development tendency of the contemporary architectural atrium space from the perspective of cities, architecture and users systematically. The tendencies include the urbanization trend from independent closed space to open sharing space, the polysemy trend from single mechanical space to dynamic composite space and the humanistic trend from purely functional space to organic ecological space. They form the main framework of this paper. In each chapter, this paper analysis the characteristics of related trends through a large number of instances and make a systematic summary of the forms and methods. We hope to provide some meaningful references for the atrium space development researches and applied methods in the future.
