In recent years, the motorcycle market is mature in china. Motorcycle users’ requirement on the riding comfort is exigent. Motorcycle vibration and noise is not accepted in the market. Manufacturers must solve the brake noise problem of motorcycle for the users. The object of the paper is the rear wheel drum brake of 150-L motorcycle. The FTA method is used to simulate and research the brake squeal. The improved scheme is put forward and implemented. It is important and valuable to solve the actual engineering problems of enterprises.According to the quality feedback from users for rear wheel drum brake of 150-L motorcycle, the fault reconstruction test was conducted. Through collecting and analyzing the related signals of brake squeal in road test, it was confirmed that the main frequency range of brake squeal is 800 ~ 1100 Hz and 1800 Hz.The FTA method was used to analyze the nine probable causes from four aspects on the rear brake structure, friction materials, components dimensional coordination and the sealing performance. The causes of rear brake squeal was initially confirmed to be the low hardness of brake shoe and the greater wrapping angle of brake linings.The modal analysis of brake shoe was accomplished by FEM software PATRAN and the modal experiment was carried out by hammering method to verify the accuracy of finite element model. A few improving schemes of the brake shoe problem were put forward. Such as reinforcing ribs and increasing the thickness of the end closed to the cam, which can improve the hardness and avoid the frequency range of brake squeal. The modal analysis and verifying test of the new brake shoe was also completed. Finally, according to the braking test, road test and crushing test of new brake shoes, it is proved that these improvements are effective. A big quantity of improved brake shoes were sent to the market. Half a year later, we visited the customers in market and found that the improvement for brake shoe was practical.
