Intangible cultural heritage is the common wealth of mankind. Renovation, protection, inheritance and development of intangible cultural heritage are a major and urgent problem that China is facing in the context of great social transformation. However, intangible cultural heritage is in a living state, so intangible cultural heritage should develop on the basis of inheritance, instead of being protected as historical relics. In this context, research is made on the application of Chengdu intangible cultural heritage into landscape design, in order to investigate the application and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage in urban landscape design.Firstly, a review of literature is made to study the intangible cultural heritage system, semiotics and the landscape design framework and analyze existing domestic and foreign studies on the application of intangible culture and semiotics into landscape design.Secondly, an introduction is made to natural geographical factors and historical cultural factors for forming intangible cultural heritage in Chengdu. Moreover, a systematic and collation is made of the spatial distribution of five categories of intangible cultural heritage including Chengdu language, spoken words, performing arts, rites and customs, knowledge and practice, and traditional handicrafts in five urban districts, four suburban districts, six counties and four county-level cities of Chengdu, to figure out spatial distribution of intangible cultural heritage in each district or area and choose the corresponding typical and representative intangible cultural heritage for each area. Meanwhile, the current status of the intangible cultural heritage protection in Chengdu and its intangible cultural heritage development and utilization mode are discussed.Thirdly, taking the urban landscape design framework as a basis, the author summarizes the features of intangible cultural heritage symbols and their applications values in landscapes, and classifies intangible cultural symbols in Chengdu from two aspects. In addition, the method of extracting intangible cultural heritage symbols is explored, and landscape design elements in various kinds of intangible cultural heritage symbols are analyzed. Focus is put on classifying and sorting out intangible cultural heritage symbols of the cultural theme category in Chengdu.Lastly, a field survey is made of urban cultural landscapes in Chengdu to sum up four principles of applying intangible cultural heritage symbols and focus on studying three methods of applying intangible cultural heritage symbols, that is, metaphoric symbolism, abstract utilization and image representation. Moreover, empirical research is made of various types of intangible cultural heritage symbols. In summary, in the context of global informationization, studying the application of intangible cultural heritage in landscape design is of great significance for creating urban cultural landscapes with unique features and inheriting the urban context.
