With the rapid development of the economic level, local governments have huge enthusiasm in road works, as well as the introduced quantitative easing monetary conditions, led to the rapid development of Chinese highway construction, but it also brings many new problems for the highway maintenance, which requiring the greater efficiency of maintenance work, and higher mechanization level. The milling machine as a major engineering machinery for highway maintenance, taking on the vast majority of the highway maintenance work. Drive axle housing is a major carrier and power transmissio n parts of milling machine, and its mechanical properties and structural characteristics have a huge impact on the overall performance of the milling machine. It needs to have a detail design, checking and analysis for the drive axle housing to improve the stability, reliability of milling machine work. As the complex geometric construction of the drive axle housing, and the variability of working load, making the calculation accuracy of traditional design methods can not be guaranteed, therefore, we need use the finite element method to do the calculation and analysis work for the drive axle housing.In this paper, we take the milling machine drive axle QSXB100, which developed by the Institute of Engineering Machinery Drive Axle of Hangzhou advance gearbox group co., LTD as research object. Based on the finite element theory, we use the finite element software ANSYS Workbench to analyze and optimize the drive axle housing, the main contents of the paper are listed as follows:1) Using three-dimensional software Pro / ENGIN EER and ANSYS Workbench, built the parameterized geometric model of drive axle housing. We did the meshing to the model in ANSYS Workbench, and built the geometric model.2) According to the relevant standards of engineering machinery bench experiment, we carried out the simulation analysis of axle housing bench, examined the strength and stiffness of the axle housing, and the calculations showed that the design of the axle housing completely accord with the standards.3) Based on the simulation results of the bench, the key size of axle housing has been optimized, and after that, the bridge shell section size reduced 8650 mm2, the diameter of the bearing shaft reduced 35 mm, then we achieved the light weight by reducing the size.4) Using the finite element software ANSYS Workbench, carried out the static analysis for the typical working condition of the axle housing, checked the strength and stiffness of the optimized axle housing, then the structure safety can be assured.
