On the background of the application of gel propellant rocket, in order to promoting the combustion efficiency of gel propellant, some experiments and numerical simulations were conducted to measure spray characteristics of gel propellant’s substitution. The aforementioned work will establish some experimental and theoretical foundation about gel for optimum condition of spray.(1) On the basis of a large number of foreign successful case and previous experience, this paper designs the nozzle which is suitable for gel characteristics and build simulation model of the nozzle.(2) Using CFD numerical analysis through commercial software FLUENT, this paper completes the simulation of steady gas flow field and spray field, and studies the effects of operating conditions on atomization.(3) According to the characteristics of non-newtonian fluid, this paper built experiment system for spray of gel. Using the experiment system to acquire atomization shapes in the different conditions, the acquisition equipment is professional micro lens. By using the method of contrast experiment, this paper analyzes the obtained pictures and get the effects of operating conditions on atomization in practice.(4) Comparison between the simulation result and experimental picture show that simulations are in good agreement with experimental picture. But since the simulations of spray were steady field, the simulations can’t give expression to change process to the caused by different operating condition.
