Seismic action on structures can be regarded as a kind of energy transfer and conversion process, energy analysis method is established on this concept. Seismic design of countries currently based on a single indicator, mainly through force and displacement to achieve, but this does not fully reflect the characteristics of structural damage in the earthquake.Considering the earthquake action from the angle of energy can well reflect the cumulative effect of damage caused by continuous time. The concept of energy analysis is clear and easy to calculate, it also took the comprehensive factors into account,so it is considered to be the direction of future research on seismic design. This paper based on the transfer, conversion and dissipation of seismic energy as the starting point, studied energy analysis method from three aspects of the analysis, calculation and application, the main work and conclusion is as follows:(l)Through the research on energy conversion equation, described two method based on the time-history analysis for solving energy response in details, the two types of solving methods of energy response, and given a simplified calculation method based on this.(2)Use a hypothetical SDOF system as the object, draw up the corresponding program based on bilinear restoring force model through the MATLAB software, calculated the energy response and hysteretic energy, damping energy’s ratio of the Wenchuan earthquake.(3)Analysed the changes of different energy by changing the initial stiffness and change regulation of different energy’s share in total input energy in the change of proportion. Research shows that, in a given initial stiffness, the total input energy and hysteretic energy of system is the highest, but with the deviations from this stiffness values, both show a downward trend at the same time.(4)Given the establishment of methods and steps of energy response spectrum, and proposed the structural damage assessment methods based on yield strength and cumulative plastic displacement.
