The road network is an important component of GIS(geographic information system) data, and also updated fastly during the urban development. the develop of road traffic result in the economic development and facilitate people’s travel. But the impervious surface of road make a big change of the city thermal environment, and the high temperature of the road surface aggravated urban heat island. Most of the previous studies of the road’s impact on urban heat island focus on the impervious properties as the same as buildings and square. This paper consider the road as an indepent factor on the study of the relationship of road traffic and urban heat island.Firstly, we summarizes the previous study on the road segmentation and extraction methods of HD resolution images, and build the workflow of the road extraction from HD resolution images. Then, we extract the road of Jinan using the mathematical morphology and object-oriented approach, and compare the result with the HD resolution images. The comparison show that the results are very similar to the reality.Secondly, land surface temperature are retrieved using single window algorithm. First, we calculate surface emissivity respectively using NDVI empirical formula and spectral unmixing analysis. Then, retrieved the land surface temperature respectively using the emissivity calculated perviously. Finaly, we compare the results from the different methods. The study shows that the method of spectral unmixing analysis works well on the calculation of emissivity.Finally, we overlay analysis the road data and temperature data, using the different scale grid cells divide the road and temperature map, and discuss the relationship of road traffic and urban heat island. The study show that urban surface temperature and road density was positively correlated.
