Tailings dam is composed of tailing sand naturally stockpiling, therefore in the production process of tailings, with the stack of heightening or retirement of multi-layer coverage and flood level rise, and under the condition of overlying pressure increased, Sand gap covered by tailings mud sand may form in high pore water pressure. This paper is based on the above research background, the steady state theory as the foundation, flaky particles characteristics of Shuikoushan copper tailings as the main medium, and the dry density, fine particle content and confining pressure steady state strength and deformation properties of tailings are discussed, the main research contents and results are as follows:1. Just like ordinary sand, saturated tail ore has three kinds of undrained shear properties: shear shrinkage properties, shear shrinkage-dilatancy character and dilatancy properties. Saturated sand sand has the very high volume shrinkage in the condition of the low dry density, so the shear shrinkage after deviatoric stress ultimately fell to very low, When the dry density increase slightly saturated tail ore sand body shrinkage is higher, may show dilatancy properties in the late shear.2. The peak intensity and the steady state strength of the same dry density of tail ore sand show the instability, but with the increase of confining pressure into the stable phase.3. Either the different confining pressure or the different contents of fine grained tail sand, in the consolidation undrained shear test, before the peak strength, fine particle content on the stress-strain relationship, but in the influence of fine grain content after the peak.4. With the increase of dry density, tail sand steady state strength increases gradually, fine particle content has a significant influence on the steady state strength of tail mineral sand, and within the scope of the fine particle content is less than 40%, tail sand steady state strength decrease with the increase of fine particle content, when the fine content more than 40%, the steady state intensity of tail ore fine particle content increases.5. Based on the theory of steady state line, the key problem of estimation of liquefaction of tailings or other soil is established when the steady state line, the undrained shear test results to determine the steady state line position is feasible and convenient.
