In both military and civilian fields, maneuvering target tracking is an important research direction. With the brilliant prospect in the Practical applications, many domestic and foreign academics and experts have drawn attention to this direction. Along with the rapid development of the aerospace technology, all flight vehicles speed and maneuverability are higher and higher. How to enhance the Performance of tracking high speed and highly maneuvering targets has become more and more important. As a result, the study of maneuvering target tracking is a challengeable task for both the theory and application. This paper could track the maneuvering targets by interacting multiple mode(IMM) algorithm under the conditions of linearity and nonlinearity; Based on the problems it meets in the duration of tracking maneuvering targets by the IMM algorithm, this paper propose the relative improvement measures.Firstly, this paper describes the basic conception and important principle of the targets tracking, and introduces the measurement mode and state mode of targets; it also gives some important maneuvering modes and a way to choose coordinate system reasonably. Secondly, around the application of IMM algorithm in targets tracking, it analyze and deduce the theory and thought of IMM algorithm detailedly; then it introduce the most common filter,such as KF、EKF and UKF under the conditions of linearity and nonlinearity, analyzing its principle of working, throughout the comparison of simulation under certain conditions, and it can analyze its result. Next, we can have a solution to the maneuvering target tracking under the conditions of linearity and nonlinearity by combining IMM algorithm and the above filters, and tracking performance has been verified by simulation under certain conditions. Finally, aiming at some problems of IMM algorithm that occurred in practical application in targets tracking, such as starting time mismatched of model filtering、unable to interact resulting from the dimensions mismatch of state vector、the predetermined and idealized markov transition probabilities in IMM algorithm、the weighted sum of the input and output only using mode probabilities as weight, it improves the algorithm and has a simulation to the improved IMM algorithm under certain conditions; analyzing the result and verifying the improved performance.
