Tailings facilities as a special industrial structure, its safe operation is extremely important to the mine, and the stability of the dam is a decisive factor in whether or not the safety of tailings dam. With the rapid development of metallurgical industry in China recent years, the number of the tailings is on the rise.With the stacking height increasing, a large part of tailings go into the late operation stage. This paper takes Hunan Pengyuan Hongda Mining Limited Company Dongmaochong tailing as the engineering background. According to the present condition,conducting three dimensional seepage stability analysis and Strength reduction stability analysis reseash, to provide theoretical guidance and practical help for practical engineering.Firstly, the paper has gaved an outline of seepage stability analysis and strength reduction stability analysis of the tailings. Secondly, we have researched the basic equations for finite element method analysis of three dimensional seepage flow stability.Then this paper have calculated the three-dimensional seepage simulation according to actual data of the tailing.Hunan Pengyuan Hongda Mining Limited Company Dongmaochong tailing dam as an example, through the analysis of site measurement 、reconnaissance and physical-mechanic parameters of damming materials, the main work and achievements are as follows: firstly, this paper introduced the basic situation of Dongmaochong tailings, including the topography、hydro meteorology and main structure etc. Tidying the tailing investigation, observation and material test data, finding out the law of the tailings dam layer, seting up the three-dimensional seepage stability calculation model.Then determine the calculation condition according to the hydrological conditions,the three-dimensional seepage under various working conditions is calculated by using the finite element software MIDAS-GTS, and the calculated results are analyzed. Then the calculation results of three dimensional seepage saturation line was used for anti sliding stability analysis, carried the numerical simulation of the status height, the minimum safety factor of the critical slip surface are obtained. Compared the calculated safety factor and the safety factor listed in criterion, it concluded the anti sliding stability analysis results. According to the seepage stability analysis result and the anti sliding stability analysis result of the tailing dam, it provided reinforcement measures and the safe operation advises of tailings.
