Superconducting power equipment especially superconducting cable has been greatly researched and developped. However, AC loss has prevented the commercialization process of HTS power devices. Although HTS cable has been put into use, AC loss will still influence the economy. The superconducting section of HTS devices is cylindrical, so the research on AC loss of the cylindrical HTS is necessary. The study that the AC loss characteristics of cylindrical high temperature superconductor used in the HTS cable, identified BSCCO,YBCO and YBCO-Ni W HTS conductor and cylindrical HTS which is made by BSCCO,YBCO and YBCO-Ni W HTS conductor as the main research object is investigated We measure the AC loss in HTS conductor and cylindrical HTS conductor by use of electrometric method. The results show that the measured AC loss in YBCO conductor and BSCCO conductor is in good agreement with the numerically calculated loss which is based on the Norris equation, while the measured AC loss in YBCO-Ni W conductor is not in accordance with the Norris equation because of magnetic substrates. Due to the impact of electromagnetic fields between the strip in cylindrical HTS, the measured AC loss is inconsistent with the numerically calculated loss based on the mono-block equation. The finite element software COMSOL Multiphysics is used to model two-dimensional finite element calculation model which is based on BSCCO, YBCO, YBCO-Ni W HTS conductor, as well as the cylindrical HTS which is made by BSCCO,YBCO and YBCO-Ni W HTS conductor, the AC loss in HTS conductor are calculated based on finite element numerical model. According to BSCCO,YBCO and YBCO-Ni W HTS conductor, from basic single tape structure to a more complex arrangement of cylindrical HTS. The experimental results, the theoretical results and the simulated calculations of AC loss based on different models are compared. The results show the reliability of numerical calculation, meanwhile, the simulation results show that AC loss can be reduced under cylindrical arrangement.
