With the development of the urban, the demands for traffic and the density of the urban road network have been increasing and also the traffic for the city’s development and people’s travel has been increasingly important. Intersections as the basic unit of urban grid networks are the areas where congestion frequently happens. It becomes a new demand of urban traffic control that how to make an effective traffic control from the strategic perspective of the whole system and the relevance between intersections. This paper analyze the shortages of current traffic signal control methods, the structure of our country’s urban networks and the operating conditions of urban traffic flow, research on the optimal control of queued vehicles, coordinated signal control of arterials, coordinated signal control of complex-arterial networks, the construction of remote traffic signal control system and so on. And the main results from researches are summarized as follows:1. Analyze the operation state of the traffic flow. Under the characteristic of the traffic flow, establish two kinds of evanesce models of queuing vehicles:one is non-saturated state model, the other is oversaturated state model. Takes the evanesce models of queuing vehicles into the arterial progression schemes, builds up the arterial control method based on the evanescence of queuing vehicle and gives the complete calculation method of cycle time, green ratio and internode offsets.2. By analyzing the structural features of the urban networks, classifies the complex-arterial networks:normal intersected arterial networks and#shape arterial networks. And based on the aforementioned arterial control method, a target to optimize coordinated control of networks as well as control method to coordinated control of complex-arterial networks is proposed. 3. In order to effectively apply advanced traffic signal control technology to the actual system and achieve the calculation of optimal traffic signal control scheme, selection and application to intersections, this article proposes to construct a remote traffic signal control system on the basis of research into the signal control system module, server approach, control scheme for the transition and so on. The analysis of traffic simulation system and the application of the system to Longwan District in Wenzhou have verified effectiveness of the coordinated control method this article proposes and the stability of remote traffic signal control system, thus giving a comprehensive and effective verification to scientificity and rationality of the coordinated control method.
