There is an increasingly urgent need to make significant efforts in the development of "Smart Grid" in order to accomplish the goal of monitoring automatically, collecting electricity information accurately and supply power efficiently, t One aspect is tha, as the further development and application of communication technology, computer technology and automation technology, Smart Grid is an inevitable trend. On the other hand, in order to realize the remote monitoring of the electrical equipment and the integration of new energy, to against the interference of natural disasters, Smart Grid is also a reliable technical instument.An efficient communication system, which can provide bidirectional and real-time communication, dense sensor, self-monitoring, proactive consumption, distributed generation and high security transmission, is an important prerequisite for Smart Grid. Both the wired and wireless communication technologies have been developed for Smart Grid recent years. Power line communication (PLC) technology can avoid wiring lines, but the data transmission relies on the power line, which causes interference, poor flexibility and low data accuracy. Cellular communication technology is more feasible with high scalability and wide range, but power grid companies have to pay much to the cellular carriers which increases the cost..In this thesis, Radio over fiber (RoF) technology is proposed to Smart Grid. A key initiative of RoF is to combine the advantages of wired communication and wireless communication. RoF technology can take advantage of the low-loss and broadband characteristics of optical fiber by using the optical fiber composite low-voltage cable (OPLC) to expand the microwave signal transmission distance and improve the wireless coverage.By research and analysis, the thesis designed smart metering solutions and smart community solutions for different kind of communities. Besides, we also built experimental platform based on RoF technology to realize smart metering and designed software with GUI to improve visualization function for this system. The result illustrates that each AP reaches throughput around18-19Mbps and the total throughput reaches74Mbps, the longest distance of fiber is up to1Km and the longest distance between AP and meter can reach100m under the indoor situation. The experiment result indicates that RoF enables the metering system to be high speed, flexible, reliable and cost-effective. And it is also innovative to converge wireless technology and fiber technology in to the new Smart Grid concept.
