Because of people’s environmental awareness and the introduction ofenvironmental regulations, green design plays an increasingly important role inmodern industry. Green design made minimal impact on environment during theproduct design, manufacture, service and the recycling process, and maximized theresources and energy using ratio in the entire product life cycle. The precondition foreffective recycling is good disassembly of the product.Modular design for disassembly, which combines disassembly design criteria withmodular design method, takes the disassemblibility into consideration in the productdesign stage to meet the functional attributes and disassembly attributes of product. Sodiscarded components can be dismantled and recycled efficiently. The specificcontents are as follows:(1)The concepts related to product disassembly design,the design process anddesign principles were introduced. The disassembly modular criteria were proposedbased on design principles and modular design. And a design structure matrix modelfor disassembly was established.(2)As reachability matrix can’t process the numeric design structure matrixcontaining more parts information by clustering analysis, it also can’t make thequantitative evaluation for modular target. Thus, the spectral clustering algorithm wasapplied and the calculation steps were proposed.(3)The influencing factors of the product disassembly were analyzed and thedisassembly evaluation model was constructed. Based on the feature of disassemblyprocess, a method of evaluating the degree of disassembly and modularity for productstructure was described.(4)Taking BIW automobile as an example, the spectral clustering was applied toanalyzed design structure matrix model for disassembly to get the clustering result. The evaluation results based on the degree of disassembly and modularity werecompared from the example of BIW automobile between similar researches. Theresults has verified the validity and the effectiveness of the modular design fordisassembly.
