| Memorial archway, the microcosm of Chinese culture, has long been considered as a symbol of Chinese civilization. It is one of the most distinctive artistic features in the construction works of Chinese traditional architecture development procedure. This greatness is not only an important part of traditional Chinese architecture in the plastic artistic field, but also has its aesthetic dominated value, with rich historical, social function heritage.Initially, memorial archway is only a single building which functioning as the constructional accessories that gradually developed into a monumental symbol of the ideal life after hundreds and thousands years of historical evolution, and also an expressional form of "ethical codes" which acts as a certain kind of materialized reflection. With the demission of feudalism, the memorial functions and values of the archway are disappeared, replaced by the arch doorway appeared in the entrance of a landscape or architecture for labeling and space defining. The development and evolution of arch came across various of bottlenecks inevitably in modern landscape. Many of them could not suit the modern landscape space design gradually, thus a huge aesthetic gap brought up to eyes among the public architectures. Meanwhile, with the growing phenomenon of urban characteristic crisis, it is such an urgent matter for requiring the high-end artistic regional landscape design. This thesis is try to solve the hot issues emerged nowadays through the study targeting on historical development and artistic forms of the traditional arch, to explore a path to carry along its essence, so that to provide a guidance or the process of exploration to help the design and application of cultural symbols of the arch in modern landscape space.From the aspect of semiotics, this article is divided into five parts to analyze and further study the cultural symbols of memorial archway applied in landscape space design. The first chapter introduces the researches of background knowledge, including the research background, purpose and significance, methods, and research status at home and abroad. The second chapter introduces the semiotics theory and the culture of arch. The third chapter analyses the culture of arch respectively from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic to elaborates the structures of cultural symbols, the significance of mechanism and the relationship with cognitive subject both in surface and depth. The fourth chapter induces the significance type theme of cultural symbols of the arch in use, summarizes the extracting principles and methods, specific techniques in application, and exploration of the supporter and patterns of cultural symbols of the memorial archway in landscape space design. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, which summarizes the results and inadequacy in the arch research. |
