Different types of defects often occur in the offshore platform crane due to environmental factors, resulting in a decline of the overall carrying capacity of the crane. Modal analysis, stress distribution and damage of crane boom are studied, according to static parameters such as stress and dynamic parameters such as curvature. The damage positions on crane are located by the application of curvature modal method, identification content and general method of crane damage are expounded. The research status of structural damage identification at home and abroad nowadays is introduced. Also, the research content and the expectations are sketched, the general method and content of the static and dynamic detection are introduced, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The theoretical basis of modal curvature difference method and characteristics is discussed; application modal curvature difference method which is used to identify the damage to the crane is detailed, Based on the offshore platform crane model and through ANSYS software the structure stress and modal parameters is simulated, the crane arm injury position most likely occurred is find out through stress distribution and model which has defects is established. The damage location is posited through the modal parameters, the curvature modal research contents and results in this paper is summarized. General discipline of how to locate the damage is got, and a method of how to detect the damage is proposed.
