With the rapid development of China’s railway and high-speed railway, the demand for engineering rail cars, which are used for railway inspection, rescue, line maintenance and construction work, is increasing gradually. And higher requirements are put forward for speed of existing rail cars and the ability of construction etc. In order to ensure the structure design of rail cars reasonable, reliable performance and safety, in design phase, using the structure analysis of computer simulation method, gives the reasonable structure design of car body.In this paper, based on a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of engineering rail cars’ use environment, structure and technical standards, the finite element model of a rail car body is built. Through the strength analysis, stress concentration is found that the car body steel structure does not meet the relevant strength requirement. The causes of stress concentration are analyzed and then partial improvement design is conducted on the original structure. Finally, the improved car body meets the requirement of strength, stiffness and mode. The calculation result shows that the rail car design is too conservative, and still has great optimizing space.Strength and stiffness of the car body structure reserve adequate. Therefore, according to the calculation results, by adopting the combination of manual and software, preliminary optimization of steel structure of roof and underframe is done, the car body structure reduces by0.43t. And then based on the theory of mathematical optimization, take the longitudinal compression condition as the optimization condition, and use software to optimize structure, the structure reduces weight by1.34t. Through the optimization, compared with the formal scheme, the structure weight decreases by12.1%.The optimization of car body is checked, the result shows that under various conditions, the rail cars can meet the requirement of strength, stiffness and mode, in conclusion, the optimization is feasible.In this paper, following the FEM analysis of rail car body, a new optimization scheme is put forward to reduce the weight to achieve the purpose of lightweight design which provide a basis for China’s new design and manufacturing of engineering rail car and car body structure improvement.
