With the rapid development of automobile technologies, multifunction and practical research of the vehicle is gradually becoming a hot topic and development trend in the field of vehicle engineering. This paper analyzed the actual demand of daily application of family car. On the basis of in-depth analysis and research of vehicle variant technology, a volume variable vehicle was designed, and then a numerical analysis on its aerodynamic performance of two forms pre and post the variant was performed.This paper expounds the design, evaluation and improvement of variable volume vehicles. Firstly, the basic scheme of variable volume vehicles was made, it was designed that the structure of variable volume trunk, as well as the shape of the vehicle with the application reverse techniques. Secondly, by simulating the flow field of two forms of variable volume vehicles with the application of simulation software Fluent, the wind resistance coefficient in the form of sedan and hatchback respectively were obtained. Reasons of differences of aerodynamic performance between two forms were analyzed from the influence of the surface pressure distribution, the velocity vector distribution and the turbulent kinetic energy distribution. Finally, according to the results of simulation, the problems existing in the original design scheme were analyzed and the improvement the deformation structure was performed, and the aerodynamic performance of the sedan form was optimized by the change of tail angle.
