With the rapid development of the wireless communication technology, the available wireless spectrum has become scarcer due to increasing spectrum demand for new wireless devices and applications. How to satisfy the spectrum demand is considered as an important issue in wireless communications. However, the large portion of the allocated spectrum is sporadically used leading to underutilization of significant amount of spectrum. To improve the spectrum efficiency, the idea of cognitive radio (CR) technology was introduced. In cognitive radio networks (CRN), secondary users (SUs) are allowed to communicate in certain licensed spectrum band without causing harmful interference to primary users (PUs). This concept of cognitive radio provides a promising solution for the spectrum scarcity issues in wireless networks.Meanwhile, the security issues of cognitive radio have received more attentions recently since the inherent properties of CR networks would pose new challenges to wireless communications. In this thesis, general concepts of security threats to the cognitive radio networks are briefly reviewed. Performances for primary user emulation attacks are studied from Neyman-Pearson criterion point of view. A novel system model with different configurations of the primary users has been proposed and studied. Our experimental results demonstrate the statistical characteristics of the probability of false alarm and miss detection in the proposed system. We also give a review about the research of application of the cognitive radio for high speed railway, including the project CORRIDOR, which is the first basic research project in Europe that will open the road for the development of CR technologies for Railway applications. The project intends to design, develop and evaluate, in real high speed railway conditions, innovative communication-interface solutions for vehicles/infrastructures, taking into account three characteristic types of usages (control-command, CCTV and Internet on board) in order to propose a better transport offer. And we also give an analysis of the prospect about the application of cognitive radio for high speed railway in China.
