Inerter has a good vibration isolation effect at low frequency and can provide considerable engineering values to vehicle suspension. Inerter-suspension with variable inertance was considered as the study object. An exploratory research on viriable inerter plans was studied, then the theoretical modeling and experimental tests on the changeable inertance device were presented. The main study includes the following aspects:(1) Based on the transfer function method and RMS evaluation system, the damaping results of three suspension strcutures in terms of body acceleration, suspension displacement, tire dynamic load were presented. The simulation result showed, the series structure suspension had a better damping effect. Then the parameter sensitivity analysis of series structure suspension was presented, and the results showed, compared to the fixed inertance inerter, suspension with variable inertance could gain better damping results.(2) Two new changeable inerter plans were presented, and the plan three, which consists of a hydraulic unidirectional rectifier bridge and a parallel structure of motor and proportional valve, was chosen as the changeable inerter realization plan based on the fuzzy evaluation method. The model was built in the Matlab/Simulink environment and then parameter sensitivity analysis of changeable inerter system was presented. The results showed the change of proportional valveā€™s current could affect the output force. As a result, the change of the equivalent inertance was achieved.(3) The prototype of changeable inerter and measurement and control test bench were built. Then a exhaust loop was designed to eliminate the air in the inerter system, thus to reduce the impact of air to inerter dynamic character. The tests on the fixed-inertance inerter and variable-inertance inerter were conducted, and the results showed the hydraulic unidirectional rectifier bridge plan could reduce the creeping phenomenon of the motor to some extent. By changing the current of proportional valve, the goal of changing equivalent inertance was achieved and the results showed the correctness and effectiveness of the built mathematical model.
