Large capacity of electricity demand and long-distance transmission is China’s unique national conditions because of its vast territory and extremely uneven distributed energy resources and electrical load.UHVDC transmission has many advantages over others in long distance, large power transmission. China began its research and application of UHVDC transmission technology in 2003, and in 2010 the first 800kV UHVDC transmission project was put into operation, now there are totally six UHVDC transmission project in operation.At the same time,the UHVDC power outage will make a direct impact and influence to safety and stability of power grid’s operation. And most of the DC power forced outage were caused by converter station equipment failure.On the purpose of improving the reliability of UHVDC’s operation, this paper first introduced advanced technology and design of UHVDC converter station in five aspects: converter valve, converter transformer, flat-wave reactor, station power supply, earth electrode. Second,It collected and analyzed the forced outage fault and present the improvement measures. Third, it introduced the intelligent level of the equipment operation and management based on on-line monitoring devices:infrared temperature measurement of valve hall, cooling Water Leakage detection, converter transformer core grounding current measurement, converter transformer oil level monitor, online gas detection monitoring of transformer oil.
