As commonly used equipments in the power system, the safety and reliability of the power capacitors are important to the stability of the entire power system’s operation. In the daily operation, there are many failures about power capacitors, such as the capacitor damage, or even explosion accident. Therefore, developing the safe operation analysis and insulation on-line monitoring technology research about the capacitor has very important meaning for guarantee the safe and stable operation.This paper analyzes the safe operation of the capacitor, analyzed the causes of the failures from the filter capacitor parameters design, fuse blown fault, capacitor installation wiring, proposed the scheme to protect the capacitor’s operation. These schemes can provide good operation environment, increasing the usage time, and have a good reference value. Then, conducting the research about the capacitor on-line monitoring, mainly form anti-jamming technology and fault diagnosis method aspects. In the on-line monitoring technology which is based on measuring the partial discharge characteristics, analyzing the interference occurred on the site on-line monitoring, studied the period narrowband interference, white noise and impulse noise digital filtering method, designing the integrated model to interfere based on Fourier series method to cycle narrowband interference, based on wavelet transform to white noise and based on the polarity of the pulse to the pulse interference, the model has high accuracy and sensitivity. In the capacitor partial discharge on-line monitoring based on the DGA, analyzing the capacitor oil gas production mechanism, and found the similarities between the capacitor and transformer oil, by setting a research platform about partial discharge, measuring three kinds of capacitor oil’s chromatography data (enzyltoluene, benzenes,25 transformer oil), the DGA IEC three-ratio method which is used in the transformer is used in the capacitor. Analyzing the data and concluding that it is feasible to use the improved IEC three-ratio method on the capacitor DGA fault diagnosis.
