Medium voltage power line communication technology is one of the important communication modes in the smart grid applications. OFDM technology has the advantage of resisting to frequency selective fading, multi-path effect and narrowband interference, and it is very suitable to be applied in medium voltage power line communication system. Therefore, OFDM is one of the preferred schemes of medium voltage power line communication modulation technology.Firstly, the characteristics of medium voltage power line channel including noise interference, channel attenuation and input impedance are studied in this paper. The basic principles, implementation process and system compositions of OFDM are introduced in this paper.Secondly, the IDFT/DFT algorithm and the FPGA realization of OFDM system are studied in this paper. According to the advantages of SIFT algorithm in terms of delay and FPGA resources consumption, SIFT algorithm is implemented and simulated in this paper by taking the software of Altera company’s Quartus II as the development platform. The simulation results show that the SIFT algorithm has higher calculation speed, shorter implementation time and no delay, as well as it is less in resource consumption and simple to realize by hardware.Finally, the symbol synchronization algorithm and FPGA implementation of OFDM system are studied in this paper. According to the comparisons and analysis of S&C algorithm, Minn algorithm and Park algorithm, the symbol timing performance of Park algorithm is better than S&C algorithm and Minn algorithm. Therefore, Park algorithm is implemented and simulated in this paper by taking the software of DSP Builder as the development platform. The simulation results show that Park algorithm is flexible, simple and intuitive, as well as it has less resources consumption and a good scalability using the modules that DSP Builder provided.
