The relay protection is a critical component to ensure the operation safety of power equipments,which is also the“first defense line”of the safety guarantee system of power grid.The performance of relay protection has significant influence on the safe and stable operation of the whole power systems. Traditional backup protections mainly employ partial information,like local information or port information of the protected components,for the detection and judgment of fault. The coordination between different protection devices is realized by fixed settings,which causes poor adaptability of protection devices and complicated coordination of settings. In recent years,with the fast development and gradually maturity of wide area synchronous measurement technique,the study of novel wide area backup protection based on wide area measuring information has attracted extensive attention.The application of wide area measuring information provides a new technical measure to improve the performance of relay protection substantially.It is helpful to solve the problem of poor adaptability and complicated coordination of settings of traditional relay protection. It can also improve the safety and reliability of protection devices in complicated fault and abnormal operation conditions.It is of very important theoretical and practical significance to ensure the operation safety of power equipments and power grid and prevent the occurrence of large-scale blackouts.As a prospective study, regional protection system is proposed, which cancels the Interval layer and the Station control layer, and keep the information acquisition unit, executing terminal and fast protection. After the technical scheme of regional protection system is studied, the architecture of the system is discussed,the hardware, software and communication program are analyzed deeply, the regional protection system has been designed and developed. According to the characteristics of dual power supply in the region, the implementation method,system identification and action logic of regional automatic bus transfer switch is proposed, the smart self-healing of grid in the region is realized.At last,the function and the system stability of the regional protection system is tested properly by the dynamic simulation test platform. The function of the regional protection system can Meet the practical need.Then the regional protection system has been put into practical application in the engineering,and Is currently running well.
