Artificial boundary is virtual boundary that is intentionally introduced to simulate theradiation damping effect of moisture continuum while limiting the infinite domain whichcan not be avoided in the analysis of site earthquake response and soil structure interaction.The viscous boundary and viscous-spring boundary is the most convenient to be applied tolarge general finite element software. This paper mainly introduces the method of using thetwo sorts of boundary in ANSYS and their precision is described. In addition, this paperintroduces the method to achieve transmitting boundary with higher precision in ANSYS.The contents are as follows:1. To introduce in detail the viscous boundary and viscous-spring boundary usingmethods in ANSYS, and improvement of viscous boundary within LS-DYNA intoviscous-spring boundary through adding springs to artificial boundary.2. To compare the energy absorption effect of the viscous boundary with that ofviscous-spring boundary while solving different problems by a large number of differentexamples. The results show that: for the two-dimensional and three-dimensional wavesource problem, viscous-spring boundary solves better than viscous boundary, especiallythe effect to solve the drift problem is obvious. For the scattering problem, viscous-springboundary is more precise than viscous boundary. Besides, one point to be noted: whenanalyzing the scattering problem by the direct use of viscous boundary within LS-DYNA,the drift may appear, if the default time step to be used. The drift problem can be solved byreducing time step or increasing the springs (i.e. viscous-spring boundary method).3. To introduce the application methods of transmitting boundary in ANSYS andcompare several boundary precision, through the source example and scattering examples.The results show that: two-order transmitting boundary accuracy is higher than that of theviscous-spring boundary and of viscous boundary.Finally, the paper summarizes, and puts forward to the further research.
