Since the beginning of aging society in our country in 1999, the aging of population had been rapidly developing, the number of the aged had been increasing. Although traditional home-care model is still being the main patterns in our country, institutions for old-age care have won a place for themselves and been larger to meet the needs of an aging society. Apartment for the aged which providing services such as catering, cleaning and health care, meet the elderly characteristics of Psychological and physiological and accommodating the elderly together emerged at a historic moment.However, the fire occurs one by another in recent years causing serious casualties, especially that caused by building fire. The inhabitants in apartment for the aged account for characterizes of being prone to fire, difficulty to evacuate and fight fire. Once the apartment caught fire, the damage and harm would be even greater. If there were short of proper fire protection design and effective fire-fighting means, severe injuries would be resulted in. Therefore, in order to ensure that older people can enjoy a comfortable and secure retirement living, the study of fire protection design of apartment for the aged must has certain practical significance.This paper uses architecture, gerontology, ergonomics, pedestrian and evacuation dynamics and the other basic theory and related theories, references to related literature at home and abroad, starts from the existing apartments for the aged research to analysis of existing apartments’ present situation of fire hazards, fire prevention design as well as the inadequacy of relevant laws and regulations. The writer put forward recommendations such as improving the architectural design specifications, tightening design standard, perfecting the fire control facilities to improve the safety coefficient of the apartment in terms of the general layout, fire resistance class, behavior for building materials and the safe evacuation. Finally the writer proposes some feasibility suggestions to improve the fire prevention design to provide reference to revise relevant technical standards on fire control.At the end of the article, the writer analyze a specific engineering case, combining with the previously suggestions proposed, and make recommendations to improvement the design of existing project, put the theory into practice...
