Environmental pollution and energy shortages make traditional fossil fuel thermal power supply facing tremendous pressure, more and more new and non-traditional energy sources such as wind, light, etc. gradually getting into the field of power generation. With the gradual increase of the installed capacity of the intermittent and variable energy, regulation capacity deficiency issues will become increasingly prominent. Energy storage technology, as a new technology, possesses good power tracking capabilities. There are many research projects in the field of energy storage for frequency regulation in many countries. In this paper, I take the opportunity to explore the issue, propose a method of storage system capacity configuration and control strategy optimization. Main contents are as follows.Firstly, the paper analyzes the features of energy storage technologies applicable to frequency regulation, including magnification features and battery life and other characteristics. Then paper compares the differences between energy storage systems and traditional thermal power, such as output characteristics, equivalent regulation capacity and the economics. The conclusions provide the basis of capacity configuration analysis and control strategies design.Secondly, from the perspective of the regulation service providers, analyzes the method of capacity configuration of energy storage system, which assists the traditional power for frequency regulation. An allocation method is proposed for directive regulating, and the economic optimization model with the goal of comprehensive income is established. With the use of advanced optimization algorithm, the optimal economic results are got. After that, analyze the influence of compensation by regulation energy and compensation by regulation depth. Results show that compensation by regulation depth can achieve more profits.Finally, a method of battery energy storage system assisted automatic generation control based on fuzzy control strategy is proposed in this paper. This fuzzy controller uses area control error and its rate of change as inputs and the reference power variation as output. Energy storage system output power is adjusted according to the system’s operating status, assisting to improve the dynamic performance of the grid frequency regulation.
