Electricity plays a huge role in the development of society today, and it ensures the normal operation of society. With the widespread use of electricity, electricity metering is becoming increasingly important, the accuracy and reliability of the system is the preconditions that it can really promote the country’s economic development, so the study on the fault of electricity metering system has become a focus of people’s concern. There are many types of faults of power measurement system and they can be classified according to different classification criteria, but in general they can be divided into two types: natural faults and human-made faults. How to detect faults for the first time or accurately predict the occurrence of faults and solve the faults in time to reduce economic losses caused by faults to the utmost have been practical problems which need to be solved by people immediately.This paper carefully studied a lot of the collected literature on the faults of power measurement system. On this basis and according to the structure and the type of failure characteristics of electricity metering system, we classified faults and proposed solutions for the common faults, designing fault information extraction circuits to extract useful detecting information from the fault signals and applying digital filtering and empirical mode decomposition to the extraction of the detection information. Specific works are as follows.First, the power metering system failure and its structure has been carefully studied and the fault is classified, according to specific failures, we propose specific solutions, and theoretically demonstrate the feasibility of these approaches.Secondly, on the basis of the proposed methods of handling faults, and the structure of the measurement system, we select the appropriate information extraction point of failure, and design fault information extraction circuits, and test the circuit in simulation environment proving its accuracy and reliability.Finally, the clutter is filtered out by digital filter from the extracted fault information, and then we extract the fault detecting information which can judge fault by a modified EMD method from the extracted information. The practical extracted detecting signal can accurately reflect the state before and after fault occurs and judge the fault which proves the accuracy and effectiveness of the method.
