With the constant improvement of automation level in thermal power plant, it is important to enhance the reliability and maintainability of generator set equipments. The traditional overhaul way of power plant exposes its limitations increasingly. Due to equipment failure, generator set stops, which has paid more attention by power generation enterprises. It is very important to take preventive maintenance for generator set equipments. Failure prognostic system of equipment has the ability to realize equipment early failure forecast, guarantee the equipment to operate safely and stablely,reduce the incidence of failure and improve equipment management ability.As one of the main auxiliary equipments, fan system makes sure sufficient air into furnace and discharge in time when the combustion is completed. They play an important part in generation set safety and economic operation. Failure prognostic system has important practical significance to fan system.This paper combines with the engineering practice, fans of thermal power plant are used for the object, and realization process of failure prognostic system is introduced. In the beginning, this paper introduces the multivariate state estimation technique(MSET)and similarity principle, which are adopted in fan failure prognostic system. The MSET method can estimate the current operation state of fan to get predictive value of every measuring point. Through the similarity coefficient function, the system gets similarity curve and similarity monitoring line. When similarity curve is below similarity monitoring line, the system begins to warn. Then, the overall design scheme of failure prognostic system of fan is introduced, including fan system and failure prognostic system. Finally, fan failure prognostic system is designed and applicated in a certain power plant in Shanxi Province. The application result shows that fan failure prognostic system can monitor running state of fan and forecast in the early of fault. Furthermore,this system can improve the level of management of power plant and efficiency of handling equipment failure, and play a positive role to improve power plant efficiency.
