This paper was based on a 492BPG diesel engine of one company as the research object, tested the exhaust noise. The purpose of this paper was to design a muffer to reduce the diesel exhaust noise by using CAE technology and reduced the design cycles and costs. So this paper had the engineering significance. The performance of muffler is mainly to analyze the transmission loss and pressure loss. In this paper, the two softwares of Actran and Fluent were used to analyze transmission loss and the pressure loss respectively, included the simple expanded muffler, resonant muffler and the effect of different structure to the performance of muffler(included the length of inserted tube, the shapes and quality of expansion chamber, the percentage of perforation, the number of tail tube and so on), got the effect rule of muffler performance through analyzed these units and structures. Provided the significant guiding function for designing the muffler through the analysis of these basic units and structures.Based on the effect rule of structure units to the muffler performance and the exhaust noise data. This paper designed two different structures of mufflers for this 492BPG diesel engine, analyzed the transmission loss and pressure loss by using Actran and Fluent, and chose better one. At the same time, analyzed the pressure loss, judeged its causes, and then made the improvement of the structure to reduce the pressure loss. At last, the improved muffler satisfied the performance of transmission loss and pressure loss, accorded with the requirement of design. So it could reduce the exhaust noise of this company and showed the feasibility of CAE technology to design muffler.
