Highway transportation currently has become the priority for people’s outing, and it has played an irreplaceable role in human life. Highway, as a band-like structure, will encounter the various types of geological hazards inevitably when crossing the different geological environment. Improving the ability of road to resist natural disasters has been a trend, especially in those worse geological areas susceptible to hazards. Loess landslide hazards are more common to take place on highways’ construction in loess area of northern Shanxi province due to the special properties of loess. Risk assessment therefore is required for loess landslide hazards in this area in order to reduce the loss and casualties to highways and humans caused by disasters, and it is of a great guiding significance on treatment and disaster prevention for highway slope hazards in loess area.This paper, relying on the Yan’an section of the highway G210, analyses the risk and puts forward the evaluation method of road collapse disasters in loess areas, from two aspects of disaster risk, bearing vulnerability research.First of all, the domestic and foreign data relevant to the loess landslide hazards were collected extensively, and further classified and summarized in order to have a general understanding of their research direction and research depth. Then the historical hazard records were collected through the field investigation of loess landslide hazards in the Yan’an section of the highway G210. The collected data analyses the types and characteristics of loess landslide hazards.Next, risk analysis on loess landslide hazards was conducted through qualitative and quantitative analysis. Risk factors of loess landslide hazards are obtained and analyzed separately, and their influencing mechanism is also determined. The selected risk factors are used to evaluate the risks of typical hazard spots, which provides the basis and support for the slope risk assessment. In addition, the slope stability is calculated by the method of quantitative analysis, and the stability coefficient is transformed into risk probability and corresponding to the analysis results.Then, based on the mechanism of the loess landslide hazards and the loess slope characteristics, the slope vulnerability is evaluated. In the risk assessment, vulnerability assessment and the expected loss evaluation, on the basis of slope method of risk assessment and risk classification is put forward.Finally, the levels of the damage of slope acceptable will be determined due to the results of risk assessment. Thus pertinent countermeasures are adopted and the engineering examples are illustrated.
