The last century since the 80’s, Cubicle Type Gas Insulated Switchgear(C-GIS) has gradually become one of the most important branches of metal closed switch equipment and widely used in power system. SF6 as the traditional insulating gas in power industry, because of its excellent insulating properties and physicochemical properties, is widely used in gas insulated metal enclosed switch equipment. However, SF6 gas is a powerful greenhouse gas, its global warming potential(GWP) is 23900 times that of CO2, is not easy to decompose and is one of the six kinds of gas to limit the use by the Kyoto protocol. Study on gas insulation based on environmental protection type C-GIS has gradually become a trend, N2 as one of the most environmentally friendly gas, low pressure gas insulated metal enclosed switchgear field is applied more and more widely concerned.The deficiency of this paper firstly on the basis of the existing literature studies the current progress in study on insulation characteristics of low pressure N2 and design a comprehensive research program, used to carry out a comprehensive and detailed exploration of the insulation performance of low pressure N2.Then the paper design and implement a set of gas discharge test device. The device can adjust the inter electrode gap length continuous, replace the sample insulator and electrode more convenient and can do this in case of not open the tank. Experimental study of N2 breakdown characteristics of low pressure on the basis of exploration under different air pressure, air gap insulated low pressure N2 and the surface insulation performance. Then this paper carried out N2 insulation characteristics of impact experiments about the voltage type, voltage polarity, electrode shape, the distance between the electrode, insulator shape and the surface roughness of insulator, and studied its gas solid insulation flashover characteristics of electrode system, factors that affect the insulation gas breakdown strength analysis.Finally, based on the breakdown characteristics of gas discharge experiment in this paper through the full understanding of N2 and its characteristics, summarizes the application of N2 in the characteristics of equipment of Cubicle Type Gas Insulated Switchgear, so as to provide useful guidance for the future design of insulation structure of low pressure N2 Cubicle Type Gas Insulated Switchgear.
