"Contemporary Retro" In Interior Design

Nostalgia has been an emotion and as much as a phenomenon that transcends time and space. Since the end of the 20 th century, with the accelerated process of social development in China, a sensational wave of nostalgic aesthetics emerged and soon turned into a taste for the local and ethnic essence. Under these circumstances the touch of nostalgia hit the industry of interior design and elevated to the appreciation of Chinese traditional culture. Contemporary retro design, as a new force, served as a way to regenerate and to innovate the culture of contemporary interior design. As a result the national artistic traditions bloomed beneath the multicultural background as a role of a host to merge the east and the west, the ancient and the modern. It is a new vision for inheriting and practicing traditional Chinese culture in today’s interior design industry.The first part of this paper is the first chapter, it introduces the research background, developments and other basic contents. Paper focused on the second part, for the second, third and fourth chapter, it attempts to define “contemporary retro design”,its purpose, and the design requirements; Second, followed by the analogy and induction for the “contemporary retro” design and its classification, this paper then extracts and analyzes the four sub-system and key points of interior design, also one by one, for example analysis. Furthermore, this paper extracted the three major interior design elements: environment, objects and methods to create contemporary retro atmosphere. The third part is Chapter V, the paper combined with the current design development elaborated "contemporary retro" design trend’s competitiveness and survival value to make sure for "contemporary retro" design social status and influence. It also studied from an international perspective on the Chinese "contemporary retro" design influence to the Western modern interior design, criticized on the cited Western interior design masterpieces and elaborated how oriental elements gradually replaced the Western concepts to Further affirmed "contemporary retro" design existence value and significance. The fourth part is Chapter VI, based on the above research, this paper then examines how the theory of contemporary retro design is practiced in the industry and summarizes the design results.This research analyzes and predicts the changes of current and future design trends as well as contradictions in consumers’ habits. In conclusion the interior contemporary retro design inspired the Oriental human spirits and has revealed how we could better inherit the Chinese traditions for the future development of China’s interior design.This paper is dedicated to the all the professionals who are committed to focusing, reviving and inheriting Chinese traditional culture.
