Power system is a highly complicated nonlinear system. It can accurately identify the damages to the electric power system disturbance, quickly find the corresponding controlling method for protection of power system, avoid or reduce the damage of the power system. Wide area protection system(WAPS) is a kind of using communication technology and modern measuring method for power system disturbance for information safeguard system of power system control. In the wide area protection system, the status of the communication technology is the key factor. High reliability and timeliness of wide-area protection system could control power system in real time. With the rapid development of communication technology, modern communication technology has strong real-time performance, thus influence the wide-area protection system mainly by the wide area protection of communication system reliability, on the wide area protection of communication system of reliability research being necessary.Study the reliability of the wide area protection of communication system needs to analyze the related specific requirements in the wide area protection of communication network from various aspects. research on the reliability of the communication system contains a system of communication network technology, communication system, communication technology, the topology of the communication system and communication system of transmission medium, and also need to evaluate and analyze the reliability of communication system hardware and software, to build a network model that could satisfy the requirement of reality, and gives the method of solving the network model, to develop a evaluation system of performance indicators, to realize accurate assessment of system reliability.This paper deeply analyzes and contrasts the existing communication technology and the communication medium. Considering satisfy the wide area protection communication system on the basis of real-time, reliability and safety requirements, building meet the performance requirements of wide area protection communication system, the system includes the network mode, the bearing pattern and the way of access, etc. According to the function classification, wide-area protection system has the following two forms: wide-area communication system and substation communication system. This article is based on anti-destroying ability reliability and survivability of two important measure for reliability evaluation of the substation communication network architecture, to compare the reliability of the star and ring topologies, the example analysis results is helpful to design better reliability of communication network topology.According to the deficiency of traditional reliability of analysis method, the application of analysis method of dynamic fault tree of reliability based on extended through the sequential Monte Carlo simulation calculations. Considering the architecture features of power system of wide area protection, communication system with regional centralized wide-area protection as an example to build dynamic fault-tree model based on extension. Through the simulation analysis of cumulative failure probability of the constitute parts of indicators, the system for located failures will provide referential basis for the weak link. Based on the extension of the fault tree, analysis method is used to actual power system for reliability wide-area of communication protection system. To build a layered model is simple, applicable to different types of protection system of reliability modeling.
