Column structure plays a crucial role in large-scale mechanics. The strength and stability of the column structure are important indicators for global carrying capacity. Because of the increasing intensely competition, the requirements of not only meeting conditions but also gaining economic benefits are proposed nowadays. So it is great useful for applying CAD/CAE technology to the design and optimization of column structure and achieving the goal from checking mechanical properties to making structural optimization. The main purpose is analyzing the strength and stability of column structure, optimizing its structure, and making it to meet the requirements of working conditions and economic benefits. The main work and achievements are summarized as follows:First of all, Patran software is applied for finite element modeling. Static analysis and stability analysis are applied for determining whether the structure meet the requirements.Secondly, secondary development on the finite element model is done by using PCL language. The parameters for optimization are chosen and parametric model is established.Thirdly, stability analysis and sensitivity analysis are used in parametric model. Then structural optimization is done base on optimization algorithm.Finally, the optimized model is refined, and static analysis and stability analysis are applied for determining whether the optimized structure could meet the requirements.Overall for analysis and optimization of column structure, we adopt a recyclable analysis process that from establishing initial finite element model, checking the mechanical properties and determining whether the structure meet the requirements, to establishing parametric model, doing sensitivity analysis, doing structural optimization design, refining the optimized model, re-checking the mechanical properties and re-determining whether the structure meet the requirements. Analytical method used in this paper is universal, which has a strong guiding significance for a similar analysis of the problem and research.
