With the increase of national steel production and the improvement of architectural requirements, more and more steel structures are used in construction. Due to the ascendancy of economic use of materials, less weight, beautiful linear structure, pipe truss column is widely used in convention cente rs, stadiums, industrial plants and other structures. Though the vehicle impact is an accidental load, its occurrence probability has gradually increased because with the improvement of living standard, probability of an event occurring car impact of buildings is increasing. But no systematic methods are introduced so far at home and abroad. So plane pipe truss column, as a vertical stress component, may be subjected to vehicle impact, which is seldom taken into account on the research and design. The whole study is centred on the failure mode, failure mechanism and failure law of plane steel truss column, and the main contents are as follows:1. Based on ANSYS/LS-DYNA a FEM of impact between vehicle and plane pipe truss column is established in the paper. An analytical method for analyzing the impact response of the truss column is established. The characteristic indicators for representing the responses of the truss column and the impact load are determined, and the flow for studying the impact response is discussed.2. Based on different failure characteristics, three failure modes for the containment are defined. The characteristic response of each failure mode is discussed. The whole failure process caused by the impact is described in detail.3. Compared with simulate results applying rigid vehicle model and nonlinear vehicle model respectively, significant disparities of impact force the truss column suffered and responses are found and they indicate that it’s infeasible for simplified rigid model to replace nonlinear model directly. Then comparing the two results with norms,it proposes a conclusion that impact loads of EN1991-1-7 and C hinese norm is relatively small and impact load of American norm is more valuable.
