Among numerous kinds of space targets, satellite is the most important one. From the perspective of national space security, detection of satellites, especially foreign satellites, has become a hotspot in research. Considering the time series image of target satellite contains abundant information, while the traditional optical target recognition and tracking algorithms only calculate target orbit, more attributes of target satellite itself can be acquired. By analyse the of the target acquired from the time series image. In this paper, the middle orbit and the low orbit satellites with the orbit height of500 km to 1000 km was studied. These satellites are different in task and mission with those early warning high orbit satellites, so they are not the spin stabilized satellites. When a three-axes stabilized satellite come into failure, for there is no system to control its attitude, it will always stay on tumbling. These two kinds of different movement state, Will cause the luminous flux of the target satellite has different changing characteristics. In this paper, the target signal extracted from the time series images will be used to determine the motion state of a target satellite. When a target satellite is determined to be a three axis stabilized satellite, There is great application value for its characteristic inversion. In the chapter of size inversion, a physical quantity of ‘albedo-Area’ is defined to describe the size of a face of the satellite. For large satellites, the size can be tens of meters to hundreds of meters; for mid-sized satellites, the size can be a few meters to ten meters; for small satellite, the size is following ten meters. The reflectivity of the surface thermal control material of the satellite body surface is usually 0.3~0.6, and the solar panels reflectance is usually0.8~0.9. The inversion of the ‘albedo-Area’ for the surface of a satellite’s body can be used to estimate the size of the satellite, and then analyzes its function and use. The inversion of the ‘albedo-Area’ for the solar panel can be used to estimate the general power of the satellite.Aiming at the application background of satellite surveillance on orbit approaching recognition investigation, the following work has been done.1.For approaching target can only be detected and recognized within certain distance, the sensor’s detection performance is analyzed and the observable distance for target detection and recognition using time series image is specified.2.The motion status of the target satellite has been decided, by analysing the spectrum characteristics of the time series spectrophotometric signal. Whether a targetsatellite is a three-axes stabilized on normal operation or a failure satellite on tumbling has been distinguished.3.Inversion method for the size of the target satellite has been studied on, the conception of albedo-area product has been put forward to describe the area of the satellite facet. Using time series image as imput data, the inversion calculation for target satellite has been conducted.
