The estimator and the guidance law are significant elements of the missile. The function of an estimator is to provide the target motion information for the missile, and the function of a guidance law is to guide the missile to hit the target according to the information provided by the seeker and the estimator. Traditional design method is to design the estimator and the guidance law separately. But actually the estimator and the guidance law are influenced by each other in a nonlinear terminal guidance system, so the estimator and the guidance law cannot be designed separately. However, strictly speaking, a thorough integrated design of the estimator and the guidance law does not exist at present. Considering the interplay of the estimator and the guidance law in the terminal guidance system, the purpose of this paper is to find a reasonable and high-performance integrated design method of the estimator and the guidance law.Therefore, Based on the performance analysis of the terminal guidance system, a new integrated design approach of the estimator and the guidance law is proposed in this paper. And the validity of this approach is verified by computer simulation. The main research and innovation points are as follow:(1) The basic model of the terminal guidance system is built, including the target motion model, the pursuit-evasion model and the filtering model. Suitable models are utilized for analysis and design respectively according to the characteristic of each model so that the process of analysis and design is simplified;(2) Analyzing the performance of the terminal guidance system by deriving the analytical bandwidth expression of the terminal guidance system. Other than traditional simulation methods which are commonly utilized for performance analysis of the terminal guidance system, the analysis method in this paper is based on the classical control theory, and obtains some significant conclusions such as the analytical bandwidth expression of the terminal guidance system and the analytical relationship between the estimator and the guidance law. These conclusions are all analytical and universal, and have significance to both performance analysis and the integrated design of the terminal guidance system. What’s more, this analysis method has a number of potential applications.(3) Integrated design of the estimator and the guidance law is carried out according to the results of performance analysis of the terminal guidance system. At present, the integrated design methods of the estimator and the guidance law are limited to designing new strategies of guidance or estimation based on existing estimators or guidance laws. Considering the interplay of the estimator and the guidance law, a new integrated design approach of the estimator and the guidance law is proposed and has realized the real integrated design of the estimator and the guidance law. What’s more, this approach can also apply to the interception of multi-targets. A large number of simulations are made to compare the performance of the new approach in this paper and the existing strategies of estimation and guidance. The validity of this approach is verified by the results of the simulations.
