Nonlinear response history analysis(RHA) of structures is becoming increasingly prevalent in codes and provisions supporting design and analysis. A reasonable challenge for both practicing engineers and developers of these codes and provisions is the selecting and scaling of ground motions(SSGM) for response history analysis of structures. Nonlinear structure response is often highly sensitive to the selecting and scaling of input ground motions, and many selecting and scaling methods of ground motion have been proposed, unfortunately, there is no consensus in the earthquake engineering community on which method is prior. This paper provides guidance to design professional on selecting and scaling methods of ground motion for the purpose of linear and non-linear response history analysis. This paper investigates several selecting and scaling methods, which are very commonly used in structure’s seismic design,in order to identify what SSGM is crucial. Meanwhile, this paper evaluates the structure’s response subjected to input ground motions though the evaluation indexes which are defined previously. The main content in this paper are as follows:1. The ground motions scenario is studied by this paper and the ground motion database is established based on the seismology characteristics of ground motions scenarios. A new method that is used to put forward the benchmark which is the evaluation criteria is researched and presented. The others methods of SSGM can be used to evaluate the structure’s response by the benchmark.2. The six typical methods of selecting and scaling ground motions that are widely used are studied and these methods are also programmed so as to they are batched easily. And then, each of these methods is used to identify and selected 7 ground motions records that are the most representative ones form the ground motions database, at the same time drawing the response spectra and the mean response spectrum of these ground motions records.3. Nonlinear dynamic time history analysis is carried out with inputting the ground motions records and the results of different parameters of structure’s response which are subjected to these records are studied and evaluated. Finally, 7 evaluation indexes of structure’s response are presented, and the comparisons of these SSGM are carried out with these parameters.
