Performance-based seismic design method is receiving more and more attention and application as a means of solving the structural design of out-of-codes high-rise buildings. There are specific provisions on performance design in domestic codes, but mainly for concrete structures. As the use of steel structures in tall buildings is more and more, a complete system with regard to the performance design of steel structures is required urgently. Guangdong Province standard Specification for design of steel structures and national standard Code for design of steel structures(draft for approval) have made relevant provisions for performance design of the steel structures. Based on the two codes, content of this paper includes the following aspects:(1) Systematically arrange and analyse performance level, component effect distinction, checking of bearing capacity, earthquake levels and performance targets, and study the material strength values and performance parameters of steel joints, giving advice for performance design of Guangdong Province standard Specification for design of steel structures. We believe the complete performance design should include deformation checking of components. The effect of component should be divided into capacity control and deformation control, and checking of bearing capacity is used for capacity control while checking of deformation is used for deformation control. And determine the deformation limit under different performance level in order to make the target of performance design more clear and reasonable; Use the average value of material strength as a symbol of whether deformation control effect of components enter the yield stage or not; Performance parameters in ASCE41-06 can not be used directly for the force-deformation curve of steel joints in our country.(2) Arrange and analyse the performance design content of national standard Code for design of steel structures(draft for approval) and compare with other specifications. Through a case compare performance design process and quantity of steel of different codes.(3) Etablish a reinforced concrete tube structure according to the actual engineering and make the analysis and design in the elastic stage. Check the results of model and determine the seismic waves for the time history analysis. Conduct the dynamic elastoplastic analysis and use three indexes checking to analyse the seismic performance of the structure.
