With the development of pulsed power technology as well as the expansion of insulator application, there put forward many new requirements for the design of the insulation structure in vacuum for large pulsed power drivers. Under different application conditions, such as strong magnetic field, laser irradiation, charged particle bombardment and strong soft X-ray irradiation, et al. In order to evaluate the work performance of insulation structure in fact, optimize the design of insulation structure, and direct the design of the similar structure, carry out deeper research for surface flashover mechanism and change regulation of the insulator performance.Based on PTS experiment platform, under the specific soft X-ray irradiation conditions, we carry out the study of soft X-ray irradiation affecting the performance of the surface flashover theory and experiment in vacuum, and it brings some scientific significance and specific value. The main completed work is as follows:The basic physical process of solid insulation surface flashover in vacuum and the related theory and experiments research is broadly reviewed. The design method of multilayer axial insulator stack applied to large drivers in vacuum and the influence factors are summarized and analyzed. We have discussed the mechanism of soft X-ray interacting materials and we have analyzed the mechanism of soft X-ray interacting the specific materials in insulation stack. Under the single irradiation and accumulation irradiation conditions, soft X-ray may change the performance of insulator materials, and affect the performance of surface flashover in vacuum. Then analyze that soft X-ray irradiation have impacted all stack flashover probability of the insulation stack in fact;Based on PTS, we have designed and built the experimental chamber for soft X-ray irradiation experiment. With the corresponding Z-Pinch experiment, the cross-linked polystyrene insulation material samples were irradiated by twice and many times. At the same time, after improving the surface flashover experimental platform, it is convenient for us to adjust the amplitude of the output voltage, and solve the problem of the electromagnetic interference on the normal work instrument, and make flashover current stable. We get the surface flashover voltage of the irradiated samples and control group samples. Experiment results show that, soft X-ray irradiation of the specific energy and spectrum in PTS can reduce the surface flashover voltage of the twice and many times irradiation samples to a certain extent, compared to the control group samples;Based on summarizing and analyzing the experimental results, a qualitative explanation about change regulation of surface flashover voltage of soft X-ray irradiated samples is put out. Then based on the modified constants γ sm of the materials, we calculate and evaluate probability of all stack in case of soft X-ray irradiation PTS stack and put out that the long term soft X-ray irradiation can lower the performance of insulator stack to a certain extent, and put forward the suggestions on structure optimization design. Related research results have a certain reference value on the large insulator stack design.
