Obsessed by urban haze and reinforced concrete buildings, contemporary residents are longing for a natural lifestyle. To build the economical landscape can help reduce manual intervention of the natural environment, maximally save natural resources and energy consumption and give full play to the ecological and environmental benefits. To achieve orderly development of ecological gardens in the future, this paper attempts to adopt three-dimensional greening as the major demonstration style. Based on a correct understanding of the connotation of the three-dimensional greening, the author analyzes different kinds of three-dimensional greening, including roof greening, vertical greening, street greening and slope protection greening. By referring to excellent projects and theoretical achievements both at home and abroad, the author puts forward the design concept of building economical ecological gardens with three-dimensional greening as the major approach, and summarizes design methods of three-dimension greening for ecological gardens and pointed to be noted so as to build a multi-dimensional environmental space featuring harmonious coexistence of humans and the nature. The planning project of Bashuoquan Village Ecological Garden in Xiyang Town, Jinan City, is taken as an example. The Ecological Garden reflects different kinds of three-dimensional greening. The author discusses the application of the three-dimensional greening to the project planning at an attempt of providing a new thinking perspective for planning and construction of economical ecological gardens. On original ecological bases with a favorable greening area, three-dimensional greening can better protect the ecological environment, improve the greening coverage area and avoid reduction of the greening area due to land development and use. In order to achieve a balanced, harmonious and sound ecological system, it is necessary to adhere to building standards of three-dimensional greening; ensure the three-dimensional greening form to be closely connected with the architectural landscape; use the topographical design to increase the layers and diversity of plants; and base on the structure and functions of the local ecological landscape system. To make full use of local resources and to accommodate plants to local growing conditions are conducive to maintenance of local ecological balance and formation of local characteristics. Application of three-dimensional greening to ecological gardens can, not only, improve the environmental quality and achieve ecological balance, but also reduce building energy consumption, increase the artistic effect of buildings, contribute to people’s psychological and physical health and achieve social and ecological benefits.
