A Study Of Chengdu Teahouse As The Development Of Public Art Space And Its Modern Transformation

Teahouses as the social public space play an important role in Chengdu people’s social life. In China, a lot of places have teahouses and they have the different influence on the local community. However, as Chengdu teahouses that have a profound effect on all aspects of people’s social life is rare. This is why the author has the motive and significance to try to study and research on Chengdu teahouses.We discuss the teahouse art, which cannot leave the discussion about the teahouse life. The Teahouse itself gives the survival soil for the teahouse art, and the social life is no doubt to provide the nutrient which makes the teahouse art growing continuously.Teahouses provide a relaxed space for the public life space, and the multivariate and tolerant of this public space pushes the generations of Chengdu’s people in teahouses. Besides that, Chengdu old teahouses offer a variety of folk art exhibition and developmental stage because of its diversity and inclusion, which makes it from public living space to public art space. It has always been one of the main performance and communication places in the Sichuan Folk Art in a long period of time. In the modern society, art form tends to be more pluralistic, art acceptable methods also increase largely, the attribute of Chengdu traditional teahouses as the public art space also will be changed and then fade from the public eye gradually, which buries risks on sustainable and healthy development of traditional teahouses.We should think the problem from two dimensions of history and modern to mining and analysis teahouse art, and try to dig the root and developmental power of teahouse art. This “Power” is from social needs. However, with the society’s development, the demand changes, motivation also recede, which put the development of Chengdu teahouses as the public art space into embarrassment. How make embarrassment into new energy of promoting the development is the problem what this paper tries to discuss.This paper is divided into five parts. The first part is introduction, reviewing the current research of academic for “teahouse” and existing problems, and putting forward my own research methods. The second part states the development and characteristics of Chengdu teahouses and compares various places of teahouses, which highlights the research value of Chengdu teahouses, and further discusses the generation of teahouse as the public living space. The third part focuses on the teahouse as the theory basis of public art space and its function. The fourth part selects the Sichuan opera and storytelling, discussing the teahouse as the change of the traditional art space to the modern art space. The fifth part is thinking for the sustainable development of Chengdu teahouses as the public art space. The last part is conclusion, discussing value of Chengdu teahouses as the public living space and public art space comparing with social needs in the modern times. Finally from the perspective of artistic, reflecting the development course, and introducing the transformation of Chengdu teahouses in order to adapt to the development of era and then prospecting the future of Chengdu teahouses.
