Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, many researches of rooftops at home and abroad have focused on the construction technology, design practices, plant species, policy forms, etc. These technologies of rooftops have already quite matured. The rapid development of urbanization led to continuous deterioration of environmental issues, such as the urban heat island effect, air pollution, soil erosion, etc. The human living environment has been widely concerned. The development of green roof provides us a new way to improve the urban ecological environment. The rooftops now are mostly occupied by private owners or left vacant, although urban and community public spaces have become very scarce with a high population density in China. The expansion of green roof is also restricted by urban and community developments and lacks of a comprehensive rooftop network system from the unitary city planning,so designing and connecting adjacent rooftops can effectively solve the scarcity of public spaces and also bring a new social, open space network in the neighborhood. This thesis is an exploration of community rooftop space in Changsha, which is based on pepople ’ s social needs. My intention for use of thesis is to be an outline of green roofnetwork framework which can create a new multiple, autonomous life style for residents on the rooftops including working, relaxing, recreation and social communication. The Xinmin Road Community in Changsha has been chosen as a typical research object. My design framework uses field survey, questionnaire, interviews and observation to layout a general way to document the rooftop space in Xinmin Road Community from three aspects of the community location, physical environment and the residents’ preference,to summarize design preconditions, design principles, the future community process which consist of neighborhood scale, building cluster scale and renewing neighborhood scale, and the future design framework which government, community and residents should participate together in. Then this theoretical design framework is applied to the Xinmin Road Community’s design practice which should use neighborhood scale to design step by step. Lastly, after summarizing the results of filed survey, I propose three prototypes of rooftop spaces according to different needs from community residents and percentage of gardening use. Those three types can be widely used in all kinds of building rooftops. First, the urban agriculture which has 60% gardening use applies mainly to urban agriculture and the larger rooftops; Second, the city square which has 40% gardening use with needs from families and kids; Third, the urban green land which has 20% gardening use with primarily leisure and social events. Finally, building a new social network for promoting social interaction between residents by the overall planning of community with these functional prototypes.
