MH-Ni batteries become one of the most prospects rechargeable batteries because of its non-pollution, high energy density, no memory effect, good safety, as well as low price, and are widely applied in various types of electronic products, power-driven tools, hybrid electric vehicles and other facilities. Requirements of different products of MH-Ni batteries are not the same, it is necessary to adjust the structures and manufacture processing of cells and additives to meet diversification and customization of customer requirements. At present, enterprise is based on experience and multiple trial-produced to develop the basically meet customer requirements for MH-Ni power batteries products, but it’s time-consuming and costly. Therefore, in order to solve the practical problems in production and develop the new MH-Ni batteries products rapidly, a new MH-Ni power batteries product design method is proposed based on Quality Function Deployment (QFD) theory and Extension Innovation Method in this paper.First of all, according to the product requirements of MH-Ni power batteries, product planning house of quality is established. Then weight of requirements and engineering metrics (EM) are obtained by using the affinity diagram method (KJ), analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy preference programming (FPP). However, there are conflicts between the requirements of product and EM. For example, increasing cycle life of batteries need to add adhesives, in turn, this will lead to rising of internal resistance, furthermore, reducing cycle life.In order to solve the conflict between the product requirements and EM, the extension model of incompatible problems is established based on solving methods of contradictory problems in Extenics. The extension strategy generating method is used to solve the extension model of incompatible problems of MH-Ni power batteries. Goal-elements are product requirements, condition-elements are EM of MH-Ni power batteries, and finding the core problem’s extension model, and then implementing extension transformations of the extended basic-elements, such as conductive additives, shape of tab, foil burrs and so on. Calculating and validating the compatibility function after transformation, converting incompatible problem to compatible problem, getting the design program of MH-Ni power batteries to meet customer demands.Finally, on the basis of the above methods, the shape of the tab and the burrs of the chip were improved, and a new type of graphene MH-Ni power batteries were trial-produced by adding graphene instead of conductive carbon black into MH-Ni battery anode material. The results showed that MH-Ni power batteries has superior performance which was verified by electrochemical performance test.
