Periodic seismic isolation foundation is a new seismic isolation method for its band gap characteristics which can inhibit the propagation of elastic waves in some frequency regions. The periodic seismic isolation foundation has extensive application prospects. From the view of engineering application, the isolating effect of layered periodic foundation under varying seismic waves is studied in this thesis. The research methods used in this study are mainly based on the theory of periodic structure and Benchmark structure model. The main works accomplished include:1. The filtering effect of one-dimensional layered periodic foundation is studied based on the theory of periodic structure. The finite element model of periodic seismic isolation foundation is established with ABAQUS and the rationality of numerical modeling is testified by the harmonic response and time history response analysis.2. The periodic seismic isolation foundation is modified and then studied by theoretical and numerical analysis in order to get a better lower initial frequency. The comparison between the response of ordinary and modified model under varying seismic waves shows that the periodic seismic isolation foundation can achieve a better control of low frequency seismic wave after modification.3. The effect of the layer number of foundation and the thickness of rubber material is analyzed, and the appropriate structure parameters are proposed from the view of damping effect and engineering practicability.4. The seismic responses of base isolated benchmark buildings with improved layered periodic foundation, rubber isolators and semi-active control algorithm with MR dampers are calculated respectively, which shows that the layered periodic foundation has a more remarkable isolating effect according to several evaluation criteria.5. Combined with the isolation characteristic of layered periodic foundation, the frequency content characteristic of ground motions is discussed, and the analysis results provide a reference meaning for the practical application of the periodic seismic isolation foundation.
