Development of water power resource is a great influence on socioeconomic, the production of hydropower resources depends on the dam. Gravity dam is general in engineering application because of its safety, reliability and good adaptation of geological conditions.The structure optimization design of gravity dam is a key link in the design of gravity dam, which is of great significance to reduce the cost of the project.In this paper, the MATLAB and ANSYS are combined to study the optimization algorithm of gravity dam, which is used to optimize the structure of the typical non-overflow section model of the gravity dam.The results could be described as:(1) The typical non-overflow section model of the gravity dam was selected, the displacement and stress distribution of gravity dam under static load were studied by using ANSYS.(2) The two-dimensional model was presented to the non-overflow section optimization model of the gravity dam. According to the normal operation requirements of gravity dam and the layout of engineering structure, the design variables, constraint conditions and objective functions were determined.(3) Developed the combination of ANSYS and MATLAB algorithm and program. Using APDL language to build the parametric model, MATLAB was the main control program to called APDL for optimizing. ANSYS was a solver for finite element analysis. The optimization setting could be completed in MATLAB, and it could realize the automation of the optimization program.(4) Then three optimization methods could be used to optimize: first-order method and equal-step searching, which was ANSYS’s own optimization module. The complex method and genetic algorithm was based on MATLAB. The calculation results showed that the complex method to get the obvious effect of optimal with the initial design scheme was compared to the area reduction 67.877m2, optimization rate reached 14.51%; genetic algorithm optimization effect of times, the area of reduced value for 66.548 m2, optimization rate reached 14.22%; ANSYS optimization module first order method and step search overlay optimization effect was weak, area reduced value for 62.344 m2, optimize reached 13.32%.The combination of ANSYS and MATLAB in the optimization design of gravity dam might have better effect than ANSYS, and this method is handy and generic. It has certain application value in the design of gravity dam.
