According to presence of plastic hinges, plastic hinge method (PHM) calculates the ultimate bearing capacities of structures in piecewise linear elastic way with high efficiencies and precisions. However, errors may occur in the traditional PHM when bending moments are reversed in the calculating process. Moreover, only the bending moment is taken into consideration in the traditional PHM, for frame structures in which combined internal forces such as axial forces and shear forces are significant, the ultimate bearing capacities obtained by traditional PHM will get large errors. On the other hand, safety margin methods (SMM), the existing methods for structural system reliability analysis, are based on the concept of PHM, but due to the series-parallel mathematical models applied in them, SMM may lose the mechanical mechanism of the evolution of structure failure. Meanwhile, effects of combined internal forces are not considered in SMMs. For that, the following researches are carried out on the plastic hinge method:Firstly, traditional PHM is improved by taken cumulative load effects in loading process into consideration, in this way, the defect that traditional PHM may make mistakes when bending moments are reversed in the calculating processes is overcame.Secondly, generalized plastic hinge method (GPHM) that combined internal forces could be considered in it is established by introducing generalized yield criterion and combining the characteristics of the piecewise linear elastic calculation format of the plastic hinge method.Thirdly, sampling plastic hinge method (SPHM) is proposed in this paper by combining iPHM with Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), which overcomes the defect that SMM could not consider mechanical mechanism of the evolution of structure failure.At last, effects of combined internal forces on failure of frames are analyzed by combining MCS and GPHM, and sampling generalized plastic hinge method (SGPHM) for structural reliability is established.
